German Politicians Demand That Nuclear Power Plants Be Turned Back On
The Energy transition in Germany has failed
I have often discussed my view that even Germany would eventually be forced to turn its shutdown nuclear power fleet back on.
I believed this would happen because of the necessity of the need for cheap and reliable electricity.
My conviction was further bolstered by the war in Ukraine and the stupid decision to allow the US to dictate Germany’s foreign policy by turning off the gas supply to Germany from Russia.
This stupidity was further complicated by the destruction of the Nordstream pipeline to force Germany to buy higher-cost seaborne LNG.
It now seems that politicians in Germany are finally waking up, and some parties are demanding that the nuclear power plants be turned back on.
Leading Union (CDU/CSU) and FDP politicians want Germany to return to nuclear power. They argue that this would be the answer to the country’s budget crisis and the weakening condition of German industry, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) portal reported on Saturday.
The politicians are demanding that recently shut-down reactors be restarted and that preparations be made to build modern small reactors.
“It is very urgent to restart nuclear power plants,” Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) said. “The energy transition has failed and must be started anew,” he noted in comments to FAZ.
In the end, math and physics were always going to assert themselves. And the universal political axiom that “people vote their wallets” was going to determine the outcome.
It has not happened yet, but we are definitely moving towards an eventual return of Germany to the nuclear power club.
